Citizens of Shanghai, fear not, no longer do you need worry about falling into the sewers of Shanghai.

Authorities from Jiading District are beginning to place sensors on manhole covers, which are, apparently, frequently stolen.

Sigh. Of. Relief.

The sensors, which are first being trialed in Jiading District, will also be used for flood precaution so that if water levels get too high, authorities will be notified and can discharge pump vehicles to areas that might get flooded.

But back to those sewage swindlers.

If a cover is removed, maintance personal and officials will receive an alarm sent to their phones allowing them to track down those plunderers more easily.

According to the Shanghai Daily, Shanghai has roughly 6.5 million manholes (and their respective covers), thousands of which go missing every year.

Cover-t opperations at their finest.
