Ultra-Popular Shenzhen Beach May Start Charging Cover

Dameisha Beach Resort Park, about a two-hour car ride from central Shenzhen, is arguably just as famous for its scenery as for the teeming masses of people that crowd it every summer. Netizens have derided it as having "more people than sand," and during last year's May Day celebrations, the beach welcomed a whopping 170,000 people. But that all might be about to change, if local government officials have their way.

Reasoning that the massive amount of people entering the area is putting undue pressure on local park staff, police, and traffic, the Yantian District Government is now pushing for action. From May 1 to October 7, the park's peak season, they plan on charging entry fees while also staggering the times visitors can enter.dameisha beach empty
Officials want a less crowded beach

Local government first started planning measures to control the number of people at the park in 2014 and even drafted a proposal at the end of that year. This past February, they sent a document to various bureaus around the city, pushing for its recommendations to be considered. On May 5, they appealed directly to Shenzhen's municipal government.

So far, their persistence seems to be paying off: at both this year's National People's Congress as well as the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), city CPPCC committee member Lu Weiping brought up the plan, backed by Yantian representative Chang Shu'an.

Will the legislation be passed? And if so, will citizens welcome the regulations or resent them? All that remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Dameisha in the summer is the same as it's been for years: crowded.
