Spiral Slides Deliver Your Food at this Shenzhen Eatery

There’s a restaurant in Shenzhen that serves dishes via spiral slides that descend from the ceiling. (Yes, we also have many questions). The spot, located in Bao’an district, is called Spacelab and although the spiral slides may be a gimmick to entice customers to check out the restaurant, the establishment has pretty decent ratings too.

Judging by their Dianping listing, the eatery seems to serve up American fare. Burgers, pasta, salad and fries come whizzing down the slide in cylindrical takeout tubs.

Watch food fall from the ‘sky’ here (VPN off):

Does the food get jostled out of place due to the high velocity it’s traveling at? Wouldn’t it just be faster if someone hand-delivered the food? One thing we can say for sure is that the contraption has people’s attention.

The spiral track system was developed in Germany by a mechanics expert named Michael Mack in 2007. The original store, nicknamed ‘Rollercoaster Restaurant’ has expanded all around the world with each store having a different theme. The track system reportedly helps dining establishments lighten the payroll (can cut up to five jobs) and saves 3-5 minutes of serving time, on average. Additionally, the dishes are driven by gravity and do not require braking equipment. Well, looks like the answers all lie in physics!

In keeping with the theme of ‘space,’ diners can order everything off tablets or their phones (which is pretty common practice in China anyways). Is this the future of dining? We’ll let you be the judge.
