New cafe: Shining Season Café & Bar

Shining Season is a story about two enthusiastic amateurs who decided to take on Shenzhen’s culinary business.

Back from a long spell in France, Lucy Shen and her cousin, trained civil engineer Sandra Yu, have totally different backgrounds but a shared passion for food. So they teamed up and set down on the competitive strip facing Rose Garden Phase II. Though inexperienced themselves, they arrived with a trump card in hand: kitchen veteran Zhang Wei, previously head chef at Shekou’s first fine dining venue, Casablanca.

Shining Season is minimalist, unique and family friendly. The attractive circular bar area at the rear of the restaurant is complemented by the panels of brown and beige that line the walls, interspersed with gold. A cheerful, arty wall with children’s paintings from the local school and a white children’s-style bookcase add to a kitschy-cute identity that’s light and breezy.

Though it’s just been open a month, the food is confidently delivered, tasty and comes in pleasingly big portions. The menu sticks to favorites and does them well: chicken quesadillas (RMB60), Dover sole (RMB78) and the Superburger (RMB60) are all high quality, well made and good value. To finish, the creme brulee (RMB35) and tiramisu (RMB40) are both excellent – fresh, moist and authentic.

The open kitchen reassures patrons with its clean and neat appearance, and chefs can be seen cooking with fresh ingredients.

Not pretentious and offering value for money, Shining Season gives you big portions of the classics, served with plenty of visual stimuli to keep both adults and kids distracted.
