Surrounded as it is by many aboveground Korean shops, it’s not surprising that Koreans as well as local Chinese make up much of Sieste’s customer base. True to the name, we even spied one customer napping here for a good 30 minutes. And why not? With wooden tables, leather sofas and dusky red brick walls, it’s akin to a cozy underground library where delicious cakes instead of books are checked out.
Located in the ever-busy Chegongmiao subway station, Sieste is an office worker’s caffeinated respite. For those who love single-origin coffee, we recommend a cup of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe (RMB45). With a slight tangerine fragrance, this medium-to-light-bodied beverage will refresh all who order it. Jamaican Blue Mountain (RMB88) can also be ordered for those not dreaming of Africa, but intrigued by a little blue-green color in their drink.
Other standard items include the Americano (RMB28), espresso (RMB20) and cappuccino (RMB30). Beers can also be purchased, such as the white Hoegaarden (RMB38) and black Oettinger (RMB35).
Of the cakes, the dark chocolate (RMB25) stands out with its ground pistachio and dried cranberry garnish. A whopping 70 percent cocoa, it’s rich but not heavy. Conversely (though still delectable), the cheesecake (RMB25) is creamy and filling. Dieters be warned.
Sieste runs its own bakery at a separate location in Shenzhen where all the cakes are made. They claim to import many ingredients, but are reluctant to mention what brands they use out of fear that other cafes will copy their creations. Customers can even custom order their own special cake.
Since there are not many options on the menu, it won’t sate those wanting a big lunch. However, for those desiring simply to grab a coffee and check some emails, it’s the right place on the block.
