UPDATE: 11 Dead After Flash Flood in Shenzhen

UPDATE (April 13, 2019 at 2.53pm CST): 11 people have now been confirmed dead, according to Shenzhen Emergency Bureau.

UPDATE (April 12, 2019 at 9.16pm CST): The death toll has now reached nine, while two workers are still missing, according to Toutiao News. A search and rescue team is still looking for the two remaining individuals.

Seven people are dead and four are currently missing after a massive thunderstorm hit Shenzhen on Thursday, April 11, causing extensive flooding throughout the city. According to Nanfang Daily, the seven dead were construction workers in Luohu District and Futian District

Three people died and two were reported missing near Huangbei Lu in Luohu District, while nearby Xihu Hotel, seven workers were washed away, four of whom were rescued, with two still missing and one dead. 

On the North side of Xiangmihu in Futian District, four construction workers were washed away by floods, with three people reportedly losing their lives. Rescue work is still underway as local authorities seek to find the missing workers.

On Thursday evening between 9pm and 10pm, the thunderstorm hit central Futian District, causing traffic to ground to a halt as water quickly flooded city streets.

Rain and thunderstorms are set to continue into the weekend, with China Weather Network projecting temperatures between 21-25 degrees Celsius for Friday and 21-26 degrees celsius for Saturday.
