In the immediate aftermath of the announcement that the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HKZHMB) will finally open to the public tomorrow (Wednesday, October 24), news has begun to circulate that authorities in Shenzhen are planning a proposal to build a section of road that will connect with the Hong Kong side of HKZHMB, according to Shenzhen Daily.
Shenzhen government officials previously lobbied hard to have the city included in the plans for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge when the project was initially being discussed in the mid 2000s. They were ultimately left out of those plans.
In 2015, the provincial government of Guangdong revealed its intention to build a bridge connecting Shenzhen and Zhongshan, a structure creatively dubbed the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge.
Construction of the underwater tunnel portion of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge got underway in July. The bridge will be 24 kilometers long and is projected to be finished in 2024. The crossing will be composed of two artificial islands, two suspension bridges and the submarine tunnel.
When the HKZMB officially opens to traffic tomorrow, it will be the second megaproject in South China to launch in just over a month. On September 23, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link began operation, connecting Shenzhen and Guangzhou to Kowloon by high-speed train.
