Early this morning, a fire ripped through a KTV parlor in Guangdong’s Qingyuan, injuring five people and killing 18, according to Xinhua.

Police believe the fire was set deliberately, but ongoing investigations are still under way.

Emergency services received reports of the blaze shortly after midnight, responding quickly and managing to fully extinguish the flames within 25 minutes. Nonetheless, casualties were widespread.

The injured parties were brought to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, while officials from the provincial and municipal level governments came out to provide support at the late night emergency scene.

The fire occurred in Yingde, a mountain town popular with weekenders from Guangzhou for its karst landscapes and natural hot springs.
