Around 3am on October 30, a fire broke out in a supermarket in Longgang’s Tongle Community, sending residents living nearby running into the street unclothed, according to a report by Tencent News.
The fire began in the Ludingji Supermarket, giving off heavy smoke that woke tenants living above the store and ultimately left no one reported injured or killed. Firefighters put out the blaze by around 4am.
Chen, who identified himself as a supermarket employee, said he suspected arson. The Longang police are investigating the cause.
“There was no one in the supermarket, but when we looked at security footage from the second floor, we discover a man bringing something into the supermarket around 2.40am,” said Chen, adding that when the man left he wasn’t carrying anything and that the fire began soon after.
Eight hours after the blaze began at 456 Shenshan Lu, the store sat cordoned off and scorched, with the smell of rubber hanging in the air, according to the report.
“It was horrifying. In the middle of the night, sleeping well, suddenly I heard ‘fire!’ I didn’t have any time to put on clothes, I just hurried my family out,” a male resident is quoted as saying.
