An 82 year old Shenzhen woman has successfully sued her 50 year old son under new filial piety legislation for failing to visit her.

A Longgang district court ordered the man, surnamed Li, to visit his mother at least once a week. The woman, surnamed Liu, whose husband is deceased has one son and five daughters.

"As an 80 year old woman, I had to wash dishes and clothes and clean the apartment on my own. Li did not even send me to the hospital when I was ill, and just my daughters came to take care of me in turns. After I moved to my daughter’s home in April, Li never came to visit me or help with repairs around the home. I was very angry that he did not do his duty as a son, so I decided to sue him and asked him to see me at least once a week," Liu said.

Li is refusing to obey the order and will appeal the verdict.

The Law on Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly People requires that family members visit the elderly more often and "forbids any form of domestic violence upon elderly people, such as insulting or discriminatory language, physical torture, or abandonment."
