By now you’re probably as tired of reading about typhoons as we are writing about them, but here we go again: the 16th typhoon of the season is barreling towards Guangdong province.
The storm, named Typhoon Mawar, was approximately 600 kilometers southeast of Guangzhou this morning at 9am and is predicted to make landfall in Guangdong sometime Sunday, September 3.
Most districts in Guangzhou issued a ‘white typhoon warning’ this morning, while Shenzhen issued a white warning last night at 5pm.
The Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality is advising Shenzheners to monitor the latest typhoon news, and asking fishermen to reinforce open-water fish farm cages. So, if you're a fisherman, take note.
Current predictions indicate the storm will make landfall near Shanwe, which is east of Hong Kong, although speculation is rife that Guangzhou and Shenzhen will be hit with the wind and heavy rainfall that came with the last two typhoons that visited the region, Hato and Pakhar.
Warnings of the impending typhoon come alongside heatwave alerts in Guangzhou, with the city’s Liwan, Yuexiu and Tianhe districts issuing a yellow heatwave warning this morning at 8.57pm. Shenzhen issued the same heatwave alert on the morning of August 30.
Typhoon Mawar's anticipated Sunday arrival will come a week to the day after Typhoon Pakhar hit the Pearl River Delta, resulting in an orange typhoon warning.
