New bar: Hawa Cafe

When we ventured over to Hawa Cafe for the first time, we were expecting a standard affair with tea, coffee and a few snacks. Imagine our surprise when we actually walked into a full-fledged bar with a Wild West theme: sunset-orange walls, an ox skull on the wall and a huge alcohol display.

After you get over waiting for Dirty Harry to saunter in, you’ll notice the prices are very affordable, making it a preferred spot for students and those looking to save a buck. It’s a mere RMB45 for a 500-milliliter whiskey and coke, while mojitos are RMB25 and tequila sunrises set you back just RMB20. All sorts of Western dishes, from sandwiches and pasta to pizza, salads and burgers, are also on the menu if you fancy a bite.

Located one block away from the Science Museum Metro, right along Shangbu Lu, Hawa is not in the midst of the usual party districts. However, with daily drink deals like the Rainbow Salsa Night on Thursdays (RMB108 for three Rainbow cocktails, consisting of cranberry vodka, orange vodka, tequila and some Chambord) and the Reggae Shisha Party on Sundays (RMB30 for shisha pipes and RMB50 for hookahs), Hawa does deliver a fresh breath of air to the already crowded bar scene and might just make a buzzing alternative hangout.

If you speed down the streets of Qianhai in your DeLorean five years from now into the future, you will see skyscrapers, shiny cars and a coffee shop called House Cafe, which captures the district’s tech savvy, innovative zeitgeist – along with the feeling of a pricey new house, nearing the end of construction.

This cafe may sound quaint, but, like a real knockbox, has proven sturdy, growing in stature amidst Hong Kong’s artisanal coffee scene. Owned by Hong Kong third-wave coffee front-runner Patrick Tam, the chain crossed the bay this December to open its first mainland branch in Coastal City.

Surrounded as it is by many aboveground Korean shops, it’s not surprising that Koreans as well as local Chinese make up much of Sieste’s customer base. True to the name, we even spied one customer napping here for a good 30 minutes.

If my grandparents furnished their study completely from Ikea, they would select the same decor as the Shuiwan cafe Baking Workers: comfortable and sturdy, like a good pair of orthotics.
