On the morning of June 16, a naked woman walking on Shenzhen’s Nanping Expressway tried to commit suicide, Southern Metropolis Daily reported. Luckily, police intervened, preventing her from injuring herself.

As early as 7.25am on the 16th, camera footage showed the woman walking along an intersection, wearing only underwear and making her way towards the expressway. At some point she took off her remaining clothes and continued on naked, sometimes stopping, sitting or even lying down.

As she walked, pedestrians stopped in surprise and cars slowed.

Shortly afterwards, two police officers caught up with the woman and tried to talk to her. She seemed upset, however, and refused to leave the road. The officers dispersed those watching and continued to keep an eye on her.

On the main road of the Nanping Expressway, they noticed the woman suddenly approaching the guardrail in an apparent attempt to jump down. One officer, named Liu Qing, pulled her away and offered her his coat. According to Liu, though, she refused it and continued walking.

Liu ended up walking with her, holding her hand to prevent any sudden moves. The woman rejected his attempts to console her and even tried to shake off Liu’s hand to jump off the expressway from time to time. She reportedly kept repeating the words, “If you’d been through what I’ve been through, you’d be like this too."

After around 40 minutes of walking, the woman finally stopped and said she wanted to go home. She also accepted Liu’s jacket, and Liu and the other officer escorted her back to Shenzhen’s Bantian police station.

According to police, the woman’s last name is Chen. A Hubei native, she turns 44 this year and has a history of mental illness. Five days ago, Chen came to Shenzhen to meet a friend she found over the Internet. The meeting went badly, however, leading to Chen’s state on the 16th.

As of June 17, Chen was in a psychiatric hospital in Shenzhen receiving treatment.
