The dust has settled, the judges have spoken and Hooley’s Battle of the Bands has come to a conclusion.
The event, now in its eighth year, saw 28 bands from across the PRD perform to a full house of rowdy music lovers over the course of four nights – the last of which, November 19, was the finals.
Finishing in first place this year was Gun, a band that blew audience members (and judges) away with their catchy riffs, larger-than-life stage presence and over-the-top theatrics. Second place was awarded to Spacefolk, while Memory Car, Wizzards of Doom, Asker Band and Mojoheads got third, fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.
Big Band Theory, a group notable for their impressive brass section, won the award for – you guessed it – Best Brass Section, while the Red Widows took home the award for Breakthrough Act. The coveted Best Original Song award was handed over to Memory Car for their song ‘Fool.’
Revolution’s guitarist Frank was crowned the king of shredding, Lesya from Asker Band won best vocalist, the best bassist award was given to Den from Mojoheads, the top keyboardist award was given to Gun’s Yuri and the best drummer prize was given to Larry from Wizzards of Doom.
That’s PRD is also happy to announce this year’s audience choice winners: Big Band Theory and Memory Car. Both bands will be receiving RMB1000 in restaurant vouchers courtesy of the That’s team.
“Thanks to all the 28 bands who participated and made a great four day music festival out of this annual event,” Battle of the Bands visionary Jon Bijlani told That’s. “It was indeed a lot of fun.”
If you were unable to make it to Guangzhou’s edition of Battle of the Bands, you still have time to organize a trip to Zhongshan for Hooley’s second annual battle on December 9.
'This is our second BOTB competition in Zhongshan. It presents a good opportunity for the winning band to make a name for themselves in the relatively small but growing music community here,” said Zhongshan Battle of the Bands organizer Steve Martin. “ We have three student bands competing this year. It's nice to see the younger guys coming out and embracing live music.'
