Basketball legend Stephen Curry touched down in China last week, stopping in Shenyang first before heading south to Guangzhou, according to the star’s Instagram account.
Curry’s visit marks the third time a notable NBA player has ventured to Guangzhou this year, the first being Shawn Marion back in January and the second being Paul Pierce in July. His China tour is part of an established tradition in which NBA stars spend the summer touring the world’s largest market in an effort to raise the game’s profile and encourage shoe sales for their sponsors.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell is currently following the Golden State Warriors' player on his Asia tour and recently stated that fans chanted his name as he left a Tianhe hotel en route to a basketball clinic at Guangzhou University on Saturday. The session was organized by Curry’s shoe sponsor, Under Armor, and featured many of the best players in the city.
"Curry leaves hotel in Guangzhou. Fans cheer 'CURRY! CURRY! CURRY!' and compete for his autograph as he walks to the car that will take him to a basketball clinic. Curry feels the crush as he enters his car and security pushes fans back."
In the evening, Curry arrived at the Asian Games Sports Stadium to coach a team of 10 young players he selected from the afternoon clinic. With his team trailing by 11 points, Curry entered the game and proceeded to drain three back-to-back 3-pointers before being fowled on his fourth 3-point attempt with only 2.1 seconds left. The two-time NBA MVP hit all three free throws for his youthful team to secure a 19-18 victory.
In addition to basketball-related endeavors, Curry took some time to learn how to make spring rolls and traditional dim sum with Four Seasons Guangzhou's Executive Chef David Greenhill.
