One of the biggest fashion/foodie events in recent months, the long-expected Vivienne Westwood cafe has landed in town. Situated just next to Vivienne’s massive clothing store in the K11 Art Mall, this is the British designer’s first-ever cafe. She personally designed the place, from the furnishings to the decorations, and the aesthetic effort shows.
The main space is inspired, fittingly enough, by a modeling runway, albeit one fitted with dining chairs and tables. Catwalk a bit further into the cafe, and there is a smaller space, reminiscent of an 18th century French tea house; chandeliers, tea trays and croissants all make an appearance. The two rooms are separated by a giant 13-hour clock, a throwback to Vivienne’s first shop, “World’s End,” which opened in 1971.
Despite visiting on a random workday afternoon, we found the cafe full – it took a 20-minute wait to finally get a seat, only then to find out that the afternoon high tea sets (RMB238) were entirely sold out. It was around 3.45pm – it’s not like we were ordering afternoon tea at midnight.
It was a disappointment, but one that was somewhat quelled after picking through the dessert menu. The classic carrot cake (RMB38) recommended by our waitress featured a decent serving of cream, a middling cake and was a bit too sweet.
Even sweeter was the lemon meringue tart (RMB38), bedecked with marshmallows. The hearty portion of cheese and ham quiche (RMB32) was creamy and savory, while cupcakes (RMB22) with a signature Saturn logo are seen on almost every table.
Locals have apparently been experiencing “Westwood fever,” and are obsessed either with the interior or the food. Our advice? Make sure you go early before all of the food is gone.
