A year ago That's Shanghai spoke to Steve Ge, founder of Xinwei Cooks, the company looking to bring high quality ingredients, perfectly portioned with an accompanying recipe, direct to your door in Shanghai. Steve was living in America when he heard friends back in Shanghai complaining about the lack of time they had to cook, coupled with the added anxiety of whether the ingredients available to them were actually safe to eat.
He saw the gap in the market, moved back to Shanghai and has set about trying to solve what he calls a 'generational' problem. He wants to get young people more interested in cooking at the same time as appreciating the value of nutritious food.
A year later, the menu has grown and Xinwei seems to be developing a loyal following of time-poor foodies in Shanghai. We road tested one of the latest menu items and quickly begin to see the appeal...
Step 1.
Boxes of ingredients arrive at your home. Or workplace. Or wherever you choose to order it to. We chose Sous-Vide Cod with vegetables for our foray into Xinwei world.
Step 2.
Open up the box, take out the ingredients and read the simple instructions. Even a cooking novice can't get this wrong, and there are only a few steps. Plus all the ingredients are already portioned and chopped. Totally approachable.
Step 3.
Start cooking as per the instructions
Step 4: Blanching the vegetables
Step 5:
Add everything to the pan
Step 6:
Serve
Making this dish was incredibly fast and simple and the result rather professional looking, even if we do say so ourselves. Although becoming accustomed to this way of purchasing and making food may feel like a bit of a special treat at first, that really doesn't need to be the case. This portion for two people only cost RMB58 per person and the cheapest dishes on the menu (such as Potato Cream Soup and Spaghetti Carbonara) start at RMB28 per person.
Xinwei is ideal for those looking to impress, but also perfect for a super convenient weeknight dinner. Take a look at their menu and dive in!
