This Japanese bossa nova queen wraps up a year of touring across China with her annual Valentine’s Day show in Shanghai. Expect romantic hits and tracks from her latest record Brasil, a paean to her birth country that also marked the 25th anniversary of her debut. She gives us a preview of the show.
What can fans expect the upcoming concert?
I’ll interact and sing together with audience. As for the decoration, it will light up the whole concert?
Do you still find Chinese songs quite challenging in terms of pronunciation?
Well, let me know if you could understand what I sing... But it’s been a very interesting experience and quite helpful to sing together with Chinese audiences.
What was the inspiration behind Brasil?
The music comes from the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s, which was a very rich era of music. I also invited my friends to join me on this project.

You’ve spent many important holidays in China. Do any of your kids complain about you being not around?
Maybe. I could spend some of the winter vacation back in Japan. My mom and brother are helping me taking care of them a lot.
Have any of them volunteered to sign with you?
Not on stage so far, but they did record with me once.
In 2014, you have started to collaborate with Chinese film directors. What about in 2015?
It is very likely for me to collaborate with a Chinese film that will release in 2015. We’ve been discussing and working on the project now.
