Jiangnan literally means “south of the river”, it refers to a region of eastern China south of the Yangtze River and Suzhou is almost a synonym for Jiangnan. Known as Venice of the East, Suzhou has 2,500 years of history combining classic culture with modern amenities. Long associated in China with high society and elegance, generations of Chinese scholars, artists, and writers have been drawn to the city.

Suzhou is well known for its UNESCO-designated classical gardens including the Humble Administrators Garden, Lingering Garden, Lion Grove Garden and six others. Visitors can also escape the city for a trip to Suzhou’s quintessential countryside and be transported back in time at one of many water towns. Built in 2006 by world-famed local architect I.M. Pei, the Suzhou Museum is also well worth the visit. For history or architecture lovers, they can also check out the recently opened Suzhou Museum West.
