Step inside Shanghai’s most up-and-coming food hall, Fantang Food Court on Yanping Lu, and allow your nose to guide you towards the smell of slowly roasting rotisserie chicken. Heat French Rotisserie may have been around for years, but their newest outlet has a revamped menu to fit in with the quicker pace of the area.

Of course you can still find your beloved rotisserie chicken, available in a Quarter Chicken (RMB58), Half Chicken (RMB108) and Whole Chicken (RMB208), but to meet the demands of the mid-day business crowd and the evening drinking contingency, the menu sees the addition of set lunches, snacks, salads and sandwiches & wraps.

Swing by for lunch (Monday through Friday, 11am-2.30pm) and get a the RMB58 set, which comes with a quarter chicken, mashed potatoes or rice, a sauce (chicken gravy, chipotle or honey mustard) and chicken soup or creamy pumpkin soup. Drop an extra RMB10 for an additional side dish of mashed potatoes, rice or okra.

Other RMB58 sets include Fried Rice with Seared Tilapia & Creamy Mushroom Soup, Spicy Chicken Chao Fan + Soup, Creamy Pasta with Chicken & Bacon + Soup, and Roasted Chicken Chao Mian + Soup. Stir Fried Beef Tenderloin + Rice and Soup goes for RMB68.

If fried foods are your jam then you’re in luck, with both the Fries Truffle Hollandaise (RMB48) – thin cut, piping hot fries plus truffle hollandaise for dipping – and the Fried Chicken Wings (RMB48) – battered and fried jumbo wings served with Thai spicy sour sauce, honey mustard and mixed cheese melt.

A trio of Deviled Eggs (RMB35) is another solid afternoon pick-me-up, with hard boiled eggs stuffed to the gills with a creamy tuna and egg yolk salad.

For a more substantial option, the Chipotle Chicken Wrap (RMB48) is filled with Heat’s signature roasted chicken, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pickled jalapeno slices, red onion and corn, all mixed with a chipotle mayo sauce.

Outside of lunch hours, the snack and sando sections have been greatly expanded to help feed the Jing’an area through delivery (Elema and Meituna), and they keep delivering until late.

The full menu is also available to drinkers at nearby Botanical Basket, and the snack menu can be dropped off at La Social until midnight, with hopes of extending that until the wee hours of the morning on weekends.

Fried chicken wings delivered hot at 1am alongside another round of martinis. Yes please.
