With seven consecutive days of Chinese public holiday, it’s understandable that a lot of people want to pay a visit to tourist sites around the country. We see it every year, from apocalyptic crowds on the Great Wall to hordes of tourists exploring West Lake.
This year was no different. Here’s seven figures that sum up Chinese tourism over the October holiday.
1. 650 billion
Tourists’ spending surged 8.47% year-on-year, reaching close to RMB650 billion during the holiday, according to figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It’s not clear what type of purchases were included in this statistic, but China Daily did note consumers’ increased spending both in tourism and daily supplies.
2. 782 million
Saying China’s tourist sites were busy would be an understatement, to say the least. Roughly 782 million visits were made to China’s domestic attractions over the holiday, marking a 7.81% increase year-on-year, according to state media, citing ministry figures. In Chongqing, an increasingly popular tourist destination, over 20 million visitors flooded into the city in the first four days of the National Day holiday.
Less time at work apparently means more time online shopping, as JD.com announced a 412% surge in outdoor sports product purchases year-on-year between National Day (October 1) and Friday. Other products also saw a major uptick in sales revenue, including video content and games (183%) as well as smartphones and electronic devices (90%).
4. Three million
Holidays are a time for celebrating, and one way to spend leisure time is by throwing back baijiu with the family. On Tmall, over three million consumers purchased Kweichow Moutai liquor (aka China’s famous baijiu) on the e-commerce platform during the holiday. Liquor turnover experienced a twelvefold increase compared to last year, China Daily reported.
This year’s National Day notably marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. During the holiday, 78.84% of tourists participated in activities celebrating the 70th anniversary, according to ministry statistics cited by Xinhua, who referred to the nationalistic tourism as ‘red tourism.’
6. RMB1.52 trillion
The Ministry of Commerce said that China’s retail and catering industries reached a colossal combined sales total of RMB1.52 trillion during the holiday. The figure was up 8.5% from the previous year, with state media noting a surge in spending on nighttime activities.
7. Seven million
Outbound trips made by Chinese tourists exceeded seven million during the holiday, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
