Professor Fangruo Chen, Dean of Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, has joined the International Management Board of the Association of MBAs and Business Graduates Association (AMBA & BGA) as a Trustee.
He is now the first AMBA & BGA Trustee to represent a Business School in China. Professor Chen has been Dean of Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University since August 2018. He is also the Guangqi Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Professor Chen graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1985 with a dual bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and ocean engineering and computer science and technology. He received a Master’s from the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1992, he started work at Columbia Business School (CBS) successively as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Tenured Associate Professor and Full Professor. In 2005, he earned the title of the Ira Rennert Professor of Business at CBS and in 2010 he became the MUTB Professor of International Business at the school.
Professor Chen has served as a distinguished visiting professor at a number of renowned institutions, such as Stanford Graduate School of Business, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University and Tianjin University. He is a former President of the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society in the US, and is the Founding President of the Chinese Scholars Association for Management Science and Engineering.
Professor Chen’s research has focused on operations management, supply chain management, and the interdisciplinary study of operations and marketing. He has served as Departmental Editor, Area Editor and Senior Editor at some of the world’s leading academic journals such as Management Science, Operations Research and Manufacturing and Service Operations Management. Through academic publications and professional endeavors, he has promoted interdisciplinary research and communication and cooperation among academia, industry and government.
He is a past winner of the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award (the former Presidential Youth Award) in the US and of the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s Distinguished Young Scholars Award, among others.
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Chen said: “It feels great to have finally come back to my alma mater, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, after 33 years in the US. Being a Dean at a leading business school in a fast-moving economy is both exciting and challenging. I hope to make a difference here in China.”
