That's Shanghai takes a look at the best art exhibits on this weekend:
I See You’re Making Progress – Ryan Gander Solo Exhibition
Image courtesy of the Lisson Gallery
This solo exhibition by British multi-discipline conceptual artist Ryan Gander puts the concept of continual progress, change and upward momentum into focus, as well as the unfortunate forces that prevent progress. The breadth of Gander’s daily inspiration is in evidence in pieces like ‘This is Creative Play, This involves some Risk Taking – Auto Abstraction,’ which sees the artist make use of children’s mathematical aids, devised by Maria Montessori, which encourages free associative play amongst visitors to the exhibition.
Until June 29, Lisson Gallery.
Healthier, Simpler, Wiser – Group Exhibition
Image via Edouard Malingue Gallery
Healthier, Simpler, Wiser brings together a trio of mid-career artists from the Southeast of China – Hu Xiangqian from Guangdong, Lai Chih-Sheng from Taipei and Kwan Sheung Chi from Hong Kong. Each of the artists will display one new work commissioned by the gallery, as well as a selection of recent works. Hu Xiangqian will strain against his nomadic lifestyle, building a house-like structure within the gallery, Lai Chih-Sheng will rearrange the gallery’s rainpipes so that they converge in the center of the gallery, while Kwan Sheung Chi will put his ‘business’ trip in focus by partaking in an imaginary business trip in the city. Strange and intriguing stuff.
Until June 30, Edouard Malingue Gallery.

Originally due to close this weekend, but extended until June 16, the explosive, thought-provoking work of young sculptor Liu Xi summons ideas of female sexuality, attempting to lay bare the female body so as to cause new interpretations of what sex means. The artist elsewhere uses her unique sculptural forms to provoke conversations about human relationships, as well as the purifying nature of struggle and pain.
