In response to Typhoon Hato, a deadly storm that hit southern China earlier this week, Facebook has decided to activate its Safety Check feature to let users in the area inform their friends and family they're okay.
That's all fine and good — admirable, even — but there's just one problem: the feature appears to have been activated for people listing Shanghai as their city of residence.
Aside from the fact that it wasn't typhooning at all in Shanghai this week, the 'Hai is also pretty far away from Hong Kong. 1,223 kilometers away, to be exact, according to recent data (AKA a Google search for "distance from Shanghai to Hong Kong").
Thanks for the concern Facebook, but we're just fine.
PS: Want to help out people actually affected by the typhoon? Here's a list of homeless charities in Hong Kong. And over in Macau, the Red Cross is on standby to help with disaster relief, while other organizations are aiding with street cleanups. More specifics here.
