Typhoon Hato has made landfall in Guangdong province, forcing school closures, inter-city train suspensions and a halt of service on aboveground portions of Shenzhen's subway system.
In Hong Kong, a No. 10 typhoon signal was issued, the first in five years and only the 15th since 1946. Hundreds of flights out of the Special Administrative Region have been canceled and the city's education bureau announced that schools would be closed Wednesday, according to South China Morning Post.
As of this morning, flooding has been reported in Hong Kong and Zhuhai.
A red typhoon warning has been issued for Guangzhou’s Nansha District, an orange warning for Panyu and a yellow alert in Haizhu, Tianhe, Liwan, Yuexiu and Baiyun. Shenzhen was upgraded to a red typhoon warning this morning at 10am.
