The phrase ‘concept album’ is usually enough to make a seasoned music aficionado wince. Sometimes it works – see Pink Floyd’s The Wall or the Who’s Tommy – but, sadly, most end up sounding like utter tripe; self-indulgent tosh of the highest order.
One band more dedicated to the art than most are prog-rock troubadours Coheed and Cambria whose front man Claudio Sanchez created The Amory Wars – a sprawling sci-fi tale which explores life and death, good and evil, loss, love and more – 10 years ago and whose subsequent albums have brought this imagined universe vividly to life. Now also a series of graphic novels and with a Hollywood movie based on the story in the pipeline, this is a stellar example of ‘concept’ done properly.
On July 25, you will get a chance to glimpse this musical universe when the band brings its unique blend of futuristic storytelling and epic performance to the Mixing Room & Muse for their inaugural China performance. Famed for their theatrical and adrenaline-fuelled performances, if rocking is your thing it’s not to be missed.
Tickets go on sale today for RMB380, which includes one free drink.
