While the name might've changed, Split Works returns to Shanghai Rugby Football Club bringing the same good vibes of last year's Echo Park to this year's Concrete and Grass Festival from September 16-17. While bad boy one-time Mandorap superstar Edison Chen might be the biggest name for local audiences, the festival bill is loaded with respected names from home and abroad ranging from legends in indie rock to hip hop. Here are 14 acts to catch. Full schedule at the end.

Sep 16

A$AP Ferg

Harlem's A$AP Mob has changed the way their hometown dresses while emerging as potent forces in hip hop thanks to emcees like A$AP Ferg, who mixed his trademark bangers with a more personal artistic touch on his excellent sophomore disc, 2016's Always Strive and Prosper. For more, check out our feature on A$AP Ferg.
Sep 16, 5.50-6.50pm. Wooozy Dimension Stage.

DJ Premier

Speaking of New York hip hop, few figures loom larger than the iconic producer. As one half of Gangstarr, DJ Premier crafted the sound of the city producing countless acclaimed street records. However, it was his iconic beats for Nas ('New York State of Mind'), Notorious B.I.G. ('10 Crack Commandments') and countless others that have made DJ Premier an untouchable institution.
Sep 16, 7-8.20pm. Wooozy Dimension Stage.

Little Simz

Just 22 years old, the British rapper, singer and actress has already found famous fans in Zane Lowe and Dizzee Rascal thanks to her tough rhymes. After releasing four mixtapes and five EPs, she released her full-length debut last year, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons.
Sep 16, 4.50-5.30pm, Wooozy Dimension and Sep 16, 8-8.20pm, Echo Stage.

Silverstein

While they may have been named after revered children's author Shel Silverstein, this Toronto act has been specializing in post-hardcore, screamo and other aggressive sounds since bursting onto the scene in 2000. They've released acclaimed records that have charted in America, a rarity for an independent Canadian band.
Sep 16, 7.10-8.10pm, Stage Left.

DJ Craze

As the only solo DJ to win the prestigious DMC World DJ Championships three years in a row, DJ Craze has earned his hallowed reputation as the consumate showman, mixing virtuoistic turntable cuts with hard hitting Miami bass, breaks and dubstep.
Sep 16, 8.30-9.30pm, Wooozy Dimension.

Zuriaake

It may have taken seven years for the Jinan dark folk-metal favorites to finally follow up their acclaimed debut disc, but Gu Yan was one of the best Mainland albums of last year. Previously known for rarely performing live, they slayed the Mainland on last year's national tour and they'll look to bring their dark arts to the festival stage.
Sep 16, 8.40-9.30pm, Stage Left.

Mr. Graceless

It`s a rare trip south for the Beijing rockers who have cultivated a following for their Beatles-esque melodies and indie-pop approach. They released their debut disc on the hallowed Maybe Mars label four years ago with fans patiently waiting for their sophomore disc.
Sep 16, 3.10-4pm, Echo Stage.

Sep 17

Sekai no Owari

A year before their milestone 10th anniversary, Sekai no Owari enjoys star status in their native Japan where they are one of the country's most popular acts. Known for their indie-pop sounds, they've already collaborated with Owl City and Nicky Romero. Expect to get even bigger as they prep their debut English language disc.
Sep 17, 8.20-9.20pm, Echo Stage.

Drunken Tiger & Yoon Mi-Rae

What initially started as a joke by iconic Korean rapper Drunken Tiger as 'my fans are better than yours' has morphed into the super group MFBTY featuring arguably South Korea's top female rapper Yoon Mi-Rae. Last year's Wonderland was a massive success, 17 of its songs taking the Top 20 spots on the Daum music charts.
Sep 17, 4.20-5.10pm, Echo Stage.

The Cribs

Once dubbed by as "the biggest cult band in the UK," The Cribs have successfully transitioned into one of England's most conistent acts thanks to a consistently evolving sound rooted in the shambolic guitar riffs of acts like The Libertines. Former Smiths guitar god Johnny Marr was a member for an album and the last three records that The Cribs has released has cracked the UK Top 10.
Sep 17, 4.50-5.40pm, Stage Left.

Health

Emerging from the ast Los Angles scene centered around the now-defunct but still iconic all-ages club, The Smell, Health has remixed Crystal Castles while unleashing three terrifying albums of ear shattering noise rock. Last year's Death Magic was their first disc in six years.
Sep 17, 8.30-9.30pm, Stage Left.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks

As frontman of Pavement, Stephen Malkmus helped shape 90s indie rock while establishing himself as the king of slack. Since going solo 16 years ago, Malkmus has continued his penchant for mixing occassionally acidic lyrics with Malkmus' distinct take on classic rock jams.
Sep 17, 5.30-6.20pm, Echo Stage.

The Go! Team

The Brighton group roared out of the gates with their still infectious debut Thunder, Lightning, Strike - an incredible mix of samples, live instrumentations, rhymes and general good times. Over three more albums, they've continue to pave their own distinctly unique path. They're back in Shanghai after rocking Split Works' Yue Festival and they've furthered their links to the Mainland, teaming with Hedgehog's Atom on the single 'Did you Know?'
Sep 17, 3.10-4pm, Echo Stage.

Birdstriking

While it may have been four years since the young Beijing rockers catapulted out of the XP scene to carry the arty noise-rock mantle for Maybe Mars records, Birdstriking have actually been keeping themselves quite busy. Last year, they toured across Europe at the behest of the Brian Jonestown Massacre with members of the popular indie group helping the quartet out with their highly anticipated sophomore album, which will hopefully come out later this year or early next year. For more, check out our 2015 interview with Birdstriking.
Sep 17, 1.40-2.20pm, Stage Left.

Concrete and Grass Festival: Sep 16-17, 11am-11pm, RMB230-300 (RMB360-440 for two day package). Shanghai Rugby Football Club, see event listing.
