Nighthawks
Since starting in 2011, this team is now 60 players strong and growing. Just like their rivals, they work hard to build awareness and continue the growth of the sport, working with programs like Gameday China and TDL100 to do so.

The Shanghai Warriors
American football is making its mark on a territory overrun by the other football. Over the past two years, The Warriors have traveled to Guangzhou and Beijing as part of the NFL Experience, as well as played exhibition games in Chengdu. The group is a mix of expats and Chinese, both experienced and first-timers.
Who can play? Anyone over 18
Season starts: The fall season runs Sep-Nov, the spring season Apr-June. There are regular workouts and social gatherings throughout the year.
When and where? Tues and Thurs, 6.30pm typically at Fuxing Park (call to confirm). Sunday, meet at Big Bamboo at 11am to take the team bus to practice, return at 5pm.

Screamin’ Demons
The Demons aim to find the most passionate and experienced football players throughout China and unite them to play on an international level around Asia. Planned destinations include the Philippines, Japan, India and Russia.

The Shanghai Titans
A team comprised of both Chinese and foreign players, anyone from beginner to advanced is invited to play. The teams will participate in the Chinese American Football League (CAFL), which debuts this fall season.

Aussie Rules Football

Shanghai Tigers
Australian’s national sport was established in 2002 in Shanghai and has since grown to a competitive level. Beyond providing regular opportunities to play, the group provides a social platform which brings together people from all ages, nationalities and backgrounds for a good old time.

Season starts: The spring season runs from Mar-June, the fall season from July-Sep.

Basketball

ASAS
A social club first and foremost, this league is divided into A and B divisions. At the end of every season, the top B team moves up, while the bottom A team moves down. Teams can have a minimum of five players, but can’t go over 15.

Bund Beach Basketball
The guys behind PX are bringing more ballers to the beach, launching this league for the fall season. The Bund Beach has opened up a cement area beyond the volleyball court and PX is bringing in the hoops. Games are 3v3 and there’s also a revamped Tiki bar for social hour after the games.

White Collar Boxing
The main hub for white collar boxers, these are the guys behind the bi-annual Brawl on the Bund event. Anyone can train here, from complete beginner to former competitor and ladies even have the option to sign up for women’s only classes.

Shanghai Cricket Club
Founded in 1858 and re-established in 1994, the club maintains a league of 17 teams with three divisions, catering to players of different ability levels and backgrounds. They also field two exhibition teams which tour around the world and host overseas clubs in Shanghai.

Providing several options for dedicated cricket fans to play the game, there are two indoor cricket leagues, plus a cricket academy providing level 1 and 2 kids coaching. The Wednesday night league plays one 1-hour-long game with 6 players per team and two 12-over innings, while the Sunday league plays 1.5 hour games with 8 players per team and two 16-over innings.

A playground game turned recreational pastime, don’t let the fun-loving nature of this sport fool you – things can get intense! Seasons run for 6-8 weeks and all teams must have a minimum of two female players per team, with a minimum of 6 and a max of 15 on the roster. Grab life by the ball.

Seca Academy
Their personalized in-house training programs are designed and led by internationally and nationally renowned coaches. Not only do they seek to educate the body and mind, but they also work to instill honor, respect, grace and etiquette through their elite sports. Along with top-notch facilities, there is also a lounge for parents and members.

Friendly matches played every Saturday with anywhere from 15 to 50 players. Games are informal and everyone’s welcome. If you don’t have your own equipment, there are a limited number of hockey sticks available on site. Make sure to bring both a red and a white top if you wish to play.

ASAS Super 7
Only seven players on the pitch makes for fast-paced games with players rotating constantly. Each team plays 11 games every season and are divided into A and B divisions, with champion teams from division B qualifying to move up next season.

Shanghai International Football League (SIFL)
The oldest and most competitive amateur football league in Shanghai, it consists of 2 divisions: The Premier League and First Division, with 10 teams in each. There are three main competitions: league, SIFL Cup and Hebiguchi Cup, as well as two tournaments throughout the season.

Shanghai Premier League
This amateur football league has steadily built a solid rep over the years, holding games on the same pitch they started on over 10 years ago. While competitive, they maintain a fun, friendly and fair aspect to the game with teams from all over the world, dubbing themselves the ‘United Nations’ of football.

WePlay League
Another fun and competitive league, these guys, and girls, play Monday nights. All games consist of 20-minute halves. Their ultimate goal is to unify Shanghai’s football community, whether on the field or after the game – they work with bars and clubs to get special deals for their players.

Indoor footie for those who prefer a faster pace. The Thursday indoor league plays 10-minute slots with three matches per night and allows four players per team. There are King of the Court tournaments held monthly with the same set-up plus rolling subs. If you want to get the kiddos started early, toddler classes are offered too.

Shanghai Gaelic Football Club
This dedicated group of men and women is made up of mostly non-Irish players (imagine that!). They train twice a week and play regular challenge games against other teams in China. They also participate in the annual All-China Games and Asian Gulf Games tournaments and organize monthly social events and fundraisers.

The popular Australian sport has arrived in Shanghai. A variety of options for players, the mixed league plays 1-hour game slots of four 10-minute quarters, but only allows for a maximum of 3 males. The Quickfire tournaments play 20 minute game slots of 7-minute halves. The Jinqiao Pearls is a 1.5 hour girl’s netball clinic run Saturday mornings.

Shanghai Touch League
Friendly games of ‘pick up’ touch – where you turn up, pay and play – are what you’ll usually find, but every several weeks or so the Big Bamboo Touch League spikes up the competition. Games are spirited, but low-impact so it’s suitable for all levels, ages and gender. They also organize plenty of socials.

Sailing

Shanghai Boat & Yacht Club
It’s a sailing club “run by members, for members,” which operates out at the west side of Shanghai’s Dianshan Lake. Founded in June 2001, they aim to bring together people of all backgrounds who love sailing and want to learn and experience more.

Season starts: Year-round
When and where? Every weekend, plus public holidays from 10am-5pm. A shuttle bus operates from the end of Line 2 to the Shanghai Boat and Yacht Club (SBYC).

Tennis

China Elite Training Academy
Both the professional Chinese and international coaches here meet the highest level qualifications and standards for coaching, instructing over 500 players across the city. They are already looking towards the Shanghai ATP Masters and are the official on-site practice partners for some of the world’s best players like Federer.
Who can play? Anyone, even three-year-olds!
Season starts:Year-round. Holiday camps are on offer for 12 weeks a year, which run when schools are on vacation.

The Shanghai Racquet Club (SRC) and Fusion Tennis
With a large range of instructional programs, competitions and events, international pros provide tennis training and playing opportunities for all levels. The Professional Tennis Registry also provides certification to both foreigners and Chinese who want to become tennis pros and/or coaches.
Who can play? Junior and adult tennis programs from beginner to intermediate levels. There is the Performance Pathway for juniors already competing at a local, national and/or international level which includes 8-year-old competitive players through to the ATP and WTA touring professionals.

Shanghai Softball League
With over 20 years under its belt, this league has developed into an A and B league with 16 teams and over 300 players. Considered the top civilian league in all of Asia, with the rapid rise of young expat migration to Shanghai, every season gets better.
Who can play? Anyone. There are 16 teams made up of mostly men, but female involvement is highly encouraged.
Season starts:The fall season started Aug 12. There is also a spring season; both last about 12 weeks.
Special events: International tournaments are held throughout Asia for serious players, with 4 top teams heading to Thailand this year.
When and where? Sunday games from 8am-6pm at the Sanlin Sports Complex with 2 games a day. All teams are sponsored by bars and there is transportation to and from games.

The TRI Federation

The TRI Federation Shanghai
A ‘new’ international sport combining Aussie rules, American football and rugby, three teams play on a circular field with a 55-yard diameter, segmented into three wedges and a circular ‘hot zone’ in the middle. A team goal is placed on the end of each wedge that players try to throw a baguette-like ball into. In this full-on contact sport, teams can even form alliances – so if you want to play, be ready to play hard.

Ultimate Frisbee

SUPA:Shanghai Ultimate Players Association
A community made up of locals and expats united by their love of Frisbees, friends and beer, don’t expect a relaxed game of toss. The sport combines the endurance of soccer with the passing skills of American football. Your post-workout beer will be well-deserved.

Season starts: Year-round. Fall season starts in late August with major tournaments in Beijing, Hong Kong and Manila. The spring season, which is more competitive, begins in late February, ending in June with the Shanghai Open.

Underwater Hockey

Azure Dragons
Also known as Octopush, the team’s been in Shanghai for more than two years now with around 20 members from all over. Participating in friendly matches (for now) across Asia, they’re always looking to grow and will even do demonstrations of their sport for schools or other swim teams. Spare gear is available for anyone who wants to test the waters.
Who can play? Water enthusiasts with at least some swimming skills.

PX Bund Beach Volleyball
Returning for the second year, the PX crew will be down at the Bund Beach this fall for six weeks of competitive play. The weather is perfect for a little competition this time of year and when the games are over, players can take advantage of the new Tiki bar and its improved food and beverage options.
Who can play? Anyone over 18 who is serious about volleyball. Each team is required to have 2 ladies on court.

Shanghai Sea Dragons
The Sea Dragons is Asia’s largest expat water polo club and has players of every standard, from beginner to Olympians. Playing in world-class facilities – home of the 2011 world championships – they also tour domestically and abroad.
