A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:


1. Chen Zhen: Without going to New York and Paris, life could be internationalized   201509/chenzhen.jpg

Rockbund Art Museum pays tribute to one of the most important Chinese artists of the last two decades. The exhibition draws from Chen Zhen’s experiences traveling between his Shanghai hometown and Paris, creating a dialogue between different continents and cutures.

2. Shanghai Ever

 MoCA celebrates their 10-year anniversary with a stellar celebration of Shanghai art. There’s a wealth of hometown stars contributing like abstract master Ding Yi, Hu Jieming (see above), Yang Yongliang and Zhou Tiehai, as well as emerging artists like Pan Jianfeng.

3. Architecture for Dogs

Famed Japanese designer and MUJI art director Kenya Hara curates this show all about improving life for man’s best friend. Touring since 2012, the show features 14 sets of specifically designed doghouses by famed architects and designers including Horishi Naito, MVRDV and the curator himself.

4. Zhang Enli

The Shanghai-based artist was recently featured in Yuz Museum’s MYTH/History II and enjoys great acclaim. This solo show will feature works from his ‘old tree,’ ‘line’ and ‘object’ series.

5. Playback: Selection from the Pierre Huber Film and Video Collection

OCT Contemporary Art Terminal hosts this stirring group exhibition consisting of 28 video works from 11 international artists (see cover image). TVs and other projections are scattered throughout the venue with works spanning from 1975 to 2013.

6. Copyleft: Appropriation Art in China

This exhibition puts the shanzai phenomenon in a different light, exploring Chinese appropriation art analytically. A practice that dates back to the late Qing Dynasty, the show attemps to expand and transform Western appropriation art theory. Expect a mix of mediums with works by Shi Yong, Wang Guanshan, Yang Zhenzhong, Yang Yongliang and Yao Ruizhong (see above).
