1. ShanghaiPRIDE Art & Photo Exhibition

ShanghaiPRIDE Exhibition

ShanghaiPRIDE kicks off the seventh edition of their festival with the opening reception of their Art & Photo Exhibition. Running with the theme of ‘Love is Our future,’ several artists with links to Shanghai have created works that reflect their experiences in the city across a range of mediums. Participating artists include Moggy Chang, Bin Hu, Dragonfruit, Scotty So, James Jarvis and Gabriel Munguia. Opening reception is at 7pm on June 12 at Polar Bear Gallery with support from Garden Restaurant & Bar. The artists will be on hand to chat from 8pm and the exhibition continues until the end of ShanghaiPRIDE on June 21 with a silent auction held throughout. For more, check out our interview with ShanghaiPRIDE co-founder Charlene Liu.

2. Dong Wensheng: Continuum

Dong Wengsheng

The Ganyu-born artist is a protégé of Zhou Xiaohu. Working primarily in photography and video art, Dong has crafted a mysterious style that originates from traditional Chinese aesthetics.  Continuum features 12 new unique black and white works continuing the artist’s experimental darkroom techniques. The camera-less works play with the chemical and material roots of photography. An artist’s reception will be held on June 13 from 5-8pm.

4. Shen Zhiying: I Don't Pretend to Understand the Universe

Shen Zhiying

In her second exhibition at James Cohan Gallery, Shanghai-based painter Shi Zhiying takes inspiration from Einstein and Herman Hesse’s last novel The Glass Bead Game. Hesse’s work follows students at an elite school attempting to explain the laws of the universe through a game involving glass beads. Shi takes those motifs in works that convey movement. A reception for the artist takes place on June 13 from 6-8pm.
