A Chinese restaurant in Nairobi has taken to barring Africans from eating at the establishment after 5pm unless accompanied by Chinese, European or Indian patrons, citing potential "security threats" (and, apparently, a complete deaf ear for racism/colonialism/etc.).
According to the local Daily Nation paper, the restaurant simply called "Chinese Restaurant" put the policy in place because, according to the establishment's owner (who is Chinese), "you never know who is [a member of terrorist group] Al-Shabaab and who isn't."
But fear not! This wouldn't be a reactive throw-back to a much-regretted era in human history unless it had an obvious exception for rich "natives," which, of course, it does.
"The management claimed that certain 'loyal' African patrons are allowed to dine in the evening," Daily Nation reports. "For an African to be considered 'loyal' [he/she] must spend Sh200,000 [about RMB13,500/USD2,170] at the restaurant over a specified period."
Kenyan authorities are concerned that the 'No African People Allowed in This Foreign-Owned Restaurant Because They're All Probably Terrorists' policy "amounts to racial and ethnic profiling," which sounds about right.
The restaurant's management says that it's "unlikely that African patrons would feel comfortable dining at the restaurant anyway" because of all of the Chinese parties held at the restaurant. Well, that's one reason they might not feel comfortable.
