China's pavilion designers for the 2015 World Expo in Milan, Italy didn't seem to hear about Xi Jinping's strong stance on architecture.
Despite the president's pronouncement that there would be no more "weird architecture" at home, they seem to have gotten away with spreading the concept abroad.
The five Chinese pavilions all have some interesting designs from international architects. The designs are symbolic of the overall theme of the Expo: "Feeding The Planet. Energy For Life."
1. China Pavilion
"The Land of hope," meant to signify a cloud formation over a field of hope. This pavilion goes against the traditional idea of a pavilion being a plaza and instead models itself as a place where the city and nature co-exist together.
2. China Vanke Pavilion
"A Venue to foster Joy and Harmony for the Chinese," this pavilion purports to represent the spirit of shitang canteen. Resembling a giant ice-cream, it makes a sort of sense. We're not sure where the designers went to school though, because we're definitely never seen a shitang like this.
3. China Corporate United Pavilion
"Seeds of Life," inspired by the shape of a DNA helix, celebrates seeds and the role they play in preserving food security.
4. KIP International School
"Attractive territories for a sustainable world," this pavilion promotes investing energy and resources into local development, and is modeled on a rural village situated around a central square.
5. JooMoo Pavilion
"Amazing Asia." This pavilion uses projections to create a surreal experience based on water and seeks to promote the conservation of water and other resources.
Expo Milano 2015 will run from May 1 to October 31.
