Shenzhen Enters the Megawatt Charging Era

Ever wished charging your EV was as quick as grabbing a coffee?

In Shenzhen, it’s getting pretty close.

As one of China’s early leaders in clean energy, Shenzhen has launched Supercharging City 2.0, stepping up its game with ultra-fast, high-powered EV chargers.

At a recent stop in Futian, a driver watched his battery jump from 29% to 50% in just four minutes; barely enough time to finish a quick espresso.

A Growing Citywide Network

By mid-2025, Shenzhen boasts 1,057 supercharging stations and over 487,000 charging points.

It already outnumbers the city’s gas stations and pumps combined.

Whether you’re zipping around downtown or cruising the Greater Bay Area’s highways, a fast charger is never far away.

Shenzhen’s electric truck charging is also taking off.

A subsidiary of CATL, Shidai Qiji Energy, is building a battery-swap network for heavy trucks that slashes downtime and keeps the city’s logistics running smoothly.

Amid all these developments, the city is piloting a cutting-edge project at Lianhuashan: a ‘One Kilometre Charging Circle’ made up of 100 solar-powered supercharging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) stations.

It’s a glimpse of the future: super-dense, smart, and interactive charging infrastructure right in the heart of the city.

Speed That Rivals Petrol

At the Shenzhen Convention Centre’s liquid-cooled supercharging hub, EVs gain 1–2km of range every second.

Local rules now require superchargers to deliver at least 480kW per gun, setting a high-speed standard across China.

BYD’s headline technology, the megawatt flash charge, can give you 407km of range in just five minutes, which is truly bringing EV charging closer to the speed of petrol refuelling.

Beyond Charging--Cars Power the Grid

Earlier this year, Shenzhen showcased how EVs can do more than charge.

Thousands of electric cars took part in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot programs, feeding tens of thousands of kilowatt-hours back into the city’s power grid.

These initiatives help ease peak energy demand and support the broader use of renewables.

Supporting these efforts, Shenzhen has built 100 solar-storage supercharging hubs and 151 V2G stations.

These smart facilities store solar energy, offer ultra-fast charging, and let drivers sell excess power back to the grid, helping reduce emissions, balance energy use, and even earn some extra cash.

It’s a clear sign that Shenzhen is shaping a cleaner, smarter, and more connected energy future.

Leading the Charge in China

With Supercharging City 2.0, Shenzhen remains a pioneer in China’s EV infrastructure landscape.

The city is building a reliable, efficient, and intelligent charging network that keeps pace with growing demand while serving as a model for other Chinese cities.

Looking ahead, Shenzhen plans to expand collaboration within the Greater Bay Area and gradually share its innovations beyond China’s borders.

While the primary focus is on domestic growth, the city’s forward-thinking approach is laying the groundwork for future regional and global developments.
