A woman in Chengdu, Sichuan province married then divorced her father this year in order to transfer his hukou to the city.
A person's hukou, or household registration, governs what social security, medical and other benefits they can receive. According to Want Daily, a woman in Chengdu found what she thought was a loophole which would enable her to move her father's hukou to the city and make him eligible for greater medical benefits; by marrying him.
Initially, the woman attempted to have her father registered as her dependent, but was unable to meet transfer requirements, so she filed for a license and married her father. However, a Chengdu court quickly ruled the hukou transfer ineffective based on Article 7 of the Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China, which prohibits marriage between lineal blood relatives.
According to reports, the only reason the woman was able to marry her father in the first place was because local civil affairs bureaus only required a written declaration by both parties that they were not related.
