Yesterday morning, nine people were killed and 10 others injured in a restaurant explosion in Wuxi, Jiangsu province.

According to Wuxi government’s official Weibo account, the deadly explosion took place on Sunday around 11am in the city’s Xishan district, and affected other stores in the vicinity. Surveillance footage across the street from the blast shows debris from buildings falling down while a cloud of smoke from the restaurant billows onto the street.

One nearby shop owner recounted the incident in a phone interview with Beijing News, saying “Our kid was outside playing and then a moment later the gas explosion took place. After that, I grabbed my child and ran inside our home, I thought it was an earthquake.”

A search and rescue mission took place following the incident, involving four excavators, firefighters, emergency responders, medical personnel and volunteers. As of press time, it’s not been made clear what caused the gas explosion.
