How do you like to spend your leisure time in China? Maybe soaking up some rays on a beach, window shopping (or real shopping) around town or exploring the cultural heritage sites around your city.
China recently released a report on the country’s top leisure cities, similar to what you’d expect a top tourist destination ranking to look like. The study was jointly published by the National Academy of Economic Strategy and Tourism Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (did you get all of that?).
The winner of the latest China ‘list wars’ is Shanghai – receiving top honors as the go-to leisure spot out of 290 cities in the PRC. The evaluation focused on aspects such as city image, eco environment, the amount of leisure options and tourism, according to China Daily.
Following behind Shanghai were Sanya and Beijing, respectively. Below is a list of the top 10 Chinese cities offering residents and tourists alike a leisurely time.

China Daily noted that cities in the eastern region outranked their western counterparts by a wide margin in regards to city image, leisure and consumption.
So, how has the list changed over the years?
In 2014, China International Leisure Development Forum gave the leisure list a crack, ranking Lijiang in Yunnan province as the top city for leisurely vibes in the Middle Kingdom, followed by Guilin and Sanya. Shanghai and Beijing didn’t even crack the top 10 five years ago.
What do you think of this year’s list? Do you think Shanghai is the most leisurely spot in the PRC? Or what about Beijing for that matter? Pipe up in the comments section and tell us your thoughts.
