A kindergarten teacher has been detained after reportedly poisoning 23 children in Henan province.

The teacher, surnamed Wang, was taken into custody on March 27 after being accused of adding sodium nitrite into students’ porridge at Mengmeng Kindergarten in Jiaozuo, Henan.

On April 2, reports revealed that the teacher had poisoned the students in a sadistic move of retaliation after having a conflict with a fellow instructor.

Multiple students were hospitalized after they began vomiting and fainting, with one father telling Global Times that his child was unconscious by the time he arrived at the school.

“The vomit was all over (my child’s) pants. There were other children who were also throwing up, and they looked pale,” the parent was quoted saying. The victims were said to all be in the same grade and had eaten the same type of porridge that day.

Students from the kindergarten have been sent to other schools while the investigation continues.
