Canadian Teacher Detained in China Released, Returns Home

China has released Canadian teacher Sarah McIver, the third Canadian national detained in China this month, according the BBC.

McIver, who was detained and sentenced to administrative punishment for illegal employment, was teaching English at a school somewhere in China (the exact region she was working in has not been made public). She was contacted by Chinese authorities earlier this month regarding her visa.

Global Affairs Canada Spokesman Richard Walker confirmed on Friday that “a Canadian citizen, who was detained in China this month, has been released and has now returned to Canada.” Walker did not provide any further information for privacy reasons.

A senior government source, who was not authorized to speak about the case publicly, confirmed to Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail that McIver is now back in the country.

The detention of the Alberta native occurred after the arrests of two Canadian men, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, who’ve both been accused of harming China’s national security. Chinese officials have denied that the two detentions are tied to Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s arrest by Canadian authorities. Meng was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on December 1 over fraud allegations related to violations of Iran sanctions.
