No Unapproved Parties for Shenzhen Officials

In China’s nationwide campaign against corruption, not even the dead will be spared. 

Starting December 1, officials in Shenzhen and their immediate family must apply for approval prior to funerals, weddings, or private celebrations of any kind, Global Times reports.

Under Shenzhen’s new system, government workers must declare details like theme and number of guests at least 10 days before any big gathering. Birthday parties, housewarming parties, and celebrations of awards or promotions are all subject to approval.

Austerity for public officials has been a cornerstone of the fanfu (anti-corruption) campaign initiated by President Xi in November 2012. Gone are the extravagant dinners, luxury cars, and conspicuous consumption common among officials in previous decades.  

Now cities are experimenting with further measures, with Guangzhou banning alcohol from (most) official functions and Tianjin tracking overseas trips by government employees.
