A short-finned pilot whale paid a visit to Guangdong’s coastal waters last week, showing up near a nuclear power facility in the prefecture-level city of Yangjiang on September 1.

The Dongping Border Police Station and the Yangjiang Oceanic and Fishery Department both received reports of the cetacean’s arrival in Yangjiang waters and rushed to the area to check on the animal.

Responding authorities determined the animal was not injured and likely lost, possibly drawn to the area due to the abundance of fish and shrimp there – the result of a 500-meter fishing ban in the waters around the nuclear facility, according to Yangjiang Daily report carried by southcn.com.
