A drug smuggler was recently caught at Shanghai Pudong International Airport with nearly 390 grams of heroin hidden in capsules inside his body.

The unidentified man, who officials say was from Africa, was caught last month, though the news was only made public this week.

The man arrived in Shanghai on May 3 and was spotted "behaving suspiciously," according to Shanghai Daily. He was asked to undergo an X-ray exam, which revealed drugs in his abdomen.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he admitted that he had been paid by someone in his home country to swallow 30 pills and bring them into China. The capsules had been wrapped in plastic paper and were in his body for over 24 hours.

He was transfered to a prison hospital, where it was later confirmed that there were 389.68 grams of heroin distributed across 30 capsules in his body.

Customs officials say this is the first case of the year involving a human body being used for drug trafficking.
