On one day alone this week, customs officials at Shenzhen’s Huanggang Port busted 10 students illegally importing an estimated RMB1 million in products.

The students, cross-border pupils who attend classes in Hong Kong but live in Shenzhen, were stopped by customs agents on May 23 and found to be transporting 90 brand-new iPhone 7s, 100 iPhone 6s and 20 Samsung S8 smartphones. 10 kilograms of high-quality bird's nests were also found inside their schoolbags, according to ejinsight.com.

An investigation reportedly revealed that the youths were “asked by some people,” ostensibly a gang of smugglers, to transport the goods and were paid for their services with ice cream and McDonald’s meals.

The young smugglers were not charged and will not face prosecution. Instead they were subjected to a lecture about the consequences of their actions and the dangers of engaging with dodgy individuals to conduct illegal activity.

Officials in Hong Kong and Shenzhen are said to be keeping in close contact on the issue of student smugglers and will work to raise awareness amongst cross-border students about the repercussions of unlawfully couriering goods.
