Police dogs donning VR cameras have been put into service for the first time ever, Chinanews.com reports.
The video recorders, which are mounted on the backs of the dogs, are the first to be used in this manner in the world. The cameras offer panoramic recordings of up to 10 meters and transmit a live feed using wifi.
Police officers can view the video recordings using virtual reality glasses. Based on the video, they can even give the dogs remote commands. So far 15 pups in the capital have undergone special training and been equipped with this new technology.
The cameras proved to stay in place when the dogs ran around and sat down. So far these newly outfitted police dogs have helped officers in anti-narcotics efforts, bomb detection and general security.
The lightweight recorders weigh 155 grams and are both shatter- and water-resistant. They can be used for up to six hours per charge and can store up to 30 gigabytes. However, it is expected that new versions will soon store up to 50 gigabytes of data.
