Meng Qi and his wife Yvonne just want the perfect home for their young son to grow up in. But for those living in Beijing, purchasing a dream home – or any home – isn’t all that feasible.

Not only does Beijing rank number one as the world’s least affordable city to rent, but it is one of the most expensive cities in the world to buy property

With this in mind, Meng and Yvonne came to the conclusion that purchasing a home in downtown Beijing was just never going to be possible. Instead, the couple signed a 10-year contract on a traditional, centrally located home in downtown Beijing.

Despite the fact that they had to settle for renting, they weren’t willing to forgo creating the perfect childhood home for their son Zhizhi... even if it’s wasn't technically theirs. To make their dream a reality, they spent a total of RMB400,000 (roughly USD58,000) to renovate their rented home to look like the one featured in the Japanese animation film My Neighbor Totoro, CRIENGLISH.com reports.

Forking out tens of thousands of dollars to improve someone else’s property might seem outlandish to some, but Meng and Yvonne appear to be at peace with their decision. For them, living in the moment is more important.
