The death of a baby is probably the most heartbreaking thing a parent can endure, but having the body of your deceased child go missing is another level of sadness entirely.
According to southcn.com, on October 26 the Luohu Maternal and Child Health Hospital announced that they had lost the body of a deceased 12-day-old infant.
The baby was born on July 11 and passed away on July 23 as a result of ABO haemolytic disease. While initially diagnosed the day after the birth, the baby’s father, surnamed You, disagreed with hospital staff that the newborn should remain hospitalized.
The parents ultimately refused advice and brought the sick baby home. By July 20, the infant was in serious condition and You decided to bring the baby back to the hospital, where it underwent three days of treatment before succumbing to the disease.
According to reports, the parents questioned the hospital's medical procedures regarding their baby and refused to allow the body to be removed for cremation. The body was discovered missing on September 23, after the dispute between the parents and the hospital had been resolved. The parents had asked to see the baby one more time before it was sent to a funeral parlor.
Police in Shenzhen have opened an investigation and the hospital has apologized and agreed to accept full responsibility if their staff are found to be involved in the body’s disappearance.
