Shenzhen Police Offer Registration Extension for Expats

Since last week’s strongly-worded letter to expats, which encouraged them to register with their local police, the Shekou Police Department has seen a massive influx of foreigners coming in for registration. To deal with the large number of requests, a new letter was released this week informing foreigners that the deadline for registration has been extended until June 17.

The original notice, which states expats must register with the Shekou Police Department or face a RMB2,000 fine, was posted June 2 and claimed police will investigate and fine foreigners who fail to register within one week of arrival. The letter also threated that a “big operation” against unregistered foreigners would take place in the near future.

A Shenzhen Daily article published this morning claims the citywide registration system has been taken down due to “technical upgrades,” although this no longer seems to be the case.

That’s PRD staff spoke with the Shekou Police Department this morning to confirm the system failure. An officer said, “the system is working, however, people who register today cannot get their receipt right away. They will need to pick them up later since there are numerous foreigners registering recently.”

If you live in other districts, you can go to the district police station to complete your registration.

Below are the necessary documents you need to bring with you (both originals and copies):

  • Your passport/ other international documents

  • Your visa/ permits to stay

  • Rental contract

  • Additional documents may be required for some individuals
