The winners of the 2016 World Press Photo Contest have been announced, with China serving as inspiration in a variety of categories.
Encroaching smog, the Tianjin explosion and nomadic Buddhists are among the themes featured in the award-winning images below:
Taken in December 2015 in Tianjin, this photo by Chinese photographer Zhang Lei captures the eerie approach of haze at sunrise. The image won first prize in the 'Contemporary Issues' category.
A third-prize winner in the category 'General News,' this photo by Chen Jie was taken in August 2015 after the devastating explosion in Tianjin.
Entitled 'China's Coal Addiction,' the image above was taken by Canadian photographer Kevin Frayer near a coal-fired plant in Shanxi province last November. The photo won first prize in the 'Daily Life' category.
Kevin Frayer of Canada photographed the image above, which won second prize in the 'Daily Life' category as part of a series depicting the life of Buddhist nomads in Sertar county, Sichuan.
