Billions of people across China rang in the new year last night, with celebrations of all sizes taking place across the nation.
Shanghai saw much lower key festivities following last year's tragic stampede which resulted in the deaths of dozens. Official celebrations along the Bund were canceled, with barriers set up around the area to prevent people from getting through. Public transportation, however, remained open later than usual.
Armed police were in full force across key areas in the city, with extra road restrictions and barriers put in place around the Bund and Xintiandi areas.
And just 4,800 people were permitted to be in attendance at the only official city-approved event at Xintiandi.
The city also banned fireworks within the Outer Ring Road.
