Canvassed: concert poster art

In America, the concept of the concert-poster-as-art has a rich and varied history. From the 1960s onwards, bands such as The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and MC5 began commissioning artists to provide one-off posters for their shows.

This trend was continued by alt-rock bands and venues, with many posters going on to develop cult followings entirely of their own. In recent months, Beijing’s leading indie livehouse School Bar has picked up the tradition – producing its own array of original and highly stylized concert art. The artwork for upcoming shows includes (from left to right) Robust Husband Records, Reborn Party/various artists (design by Ca Zhuxi); Bad Education, Vol.3, Launch Party/various artists (design by Liu Fei); and The Pyongyang Star, Vol.1, Launch Party/various artists (design by Zhan Pan).
