Restaurant: El Gran Bocado - Even Bigger Bite

On El Gran Bocado’s inside wall, next to the staircase, owner Ray Heng has begun sketching the outline of a “Mexican food map” – a large mural spanning the entire south western coast of North and Central America, from Acapulco to Monterey. Of course, a more realistic map would likely be much bigger given that Mexican food can now be found just about everywhere, especially in Beijing – a city seemingly in love with its tacos.

“There’s something about Mexican food that inspires a certain amount of devotion,” says 31-year-old Heng. “It’s simple enough that people can adapt it to local styles. But, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily always that good.”

Indeed. Fortunately, El Gran Bocado is among the very best Mexican joints you’re likely to find this side of the Pacific. The restaurant recently updated its already impressive menu. So what’s new?

Well, there’s a range of spicy margaritas, expanded burrito options, new sauces at the salsa bar, and, best of all, seriously delicious all new Baja fish tacos (RMB55). The Baja set comes with two six-inch grilled and charred flour tortillas, filled with pan-seared imported flounder fish fillet and topped with Chipotle mayonnaise coleslaw, spicy avocado cream and crumbled queso fresco (Mexican fresh cheese). Optional watermelon pico-de-gallo can also be found at the aforementioned well-stocked salsa bar. Perfect for those hot, summer months ahead.
